I want to hear what you think about Local Government Reorganisation.
The Labour Government in Westminster have chosen to reorganise local government in Suffolk. There are two proposals for our area – One Suffolk or multiple unitary authorities.
What is a unitary?
A unitary council, also known as a unitary authority, is a type of local government where a single council is responsible for providing all local government services within a specific area. This contrasts with the two-tier system we currently have where Suffolk County Council are responsible for education, transport and social care and Babergh District Council are responsible for housing, planning and bin collection.
Next steps
In September 2025, Suffolk will present their proposals to the Government for a unitary authority. Whether that will be one Suffolk, or multiple unitary authorities is still undecided, so I want to know what you would like for the future of local councils.
Below you will find two documents setting out the case for One Suffolk from Suffolk County Council and multiple unitary authorities from the local district councils.
I'd like to hear from you on what your preference would be so please respond below.
