An MP has renewed calls to make a train station accessible amid the Government's takeover of the rail network.
James Cartlidge, MP for South Suffolk, wrote to Heidi Alexander, the transport secretary, asking for lift access to be installed between all platforms at Marks Tey train station, near Colchester.
He said the lack of step-free access between the Sudbury branch line and the main line was causing difficulties for many of his constituents with disabilities or travelling with heavy luggage.
"I am often contacted by constituents who face challenges when changing platforms at Marks Tey due to mobility limitations.
"Indeed, I use the Sudbury Branch Line when I travel to and from Westminster, and I often witness firsthand the issues that the lack of step-free access can cause for travellers," he said.
It is not the first time Mr Cartlidge has raised this issue, having campaigned for improved accessibility at the station for several years alongside Dame Priti Patel, MP for Witham.
This time around, however, the request comes after the Government brought Greater Anglia into public ownership, bringing it under the control of the Department for Transport.
He asked that the new lift be prioritised in the next round of Access for All Funding, a scheme brought forward by the Government in 2006 to address accessibility issues in stations across the country.
