A Member of Parliament has encouraged Hadleigh residents to make the most of their local archive, to stay in touch with their heritage.

The Hadleigh Archive Group welcomed South Suffolk MP James Cartlidge to the town’s Guildhall last week to showcase significant documents relating to the history of the town.

Volunteers showed Mr Cartlidge a range of archived materials, such as a 1432 charter confirming the market, and market rights granted in 1252 to the Lord and Lady of Toppesfield Manor.

The archive group, which falls under the umbrella of Hadleigh Town Council, has conserved and catalogued thousands of documents, including more than 6,000 scanned photographs of the town through the ages.

“I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to the Hadleigh Town Council Archives,” said Mr Cartlidge.

“I would encourage any constituents who are interested in the history of the town to get in touch with the group directly.”

To contact the archive group, send an email to [email protected].
