Rated as outstanding by schools inspectors Ofsted, Lavenham Primary School is the first choice of many parents from both within and outside the village, however, its current capacity does not even meet village demand.
Despite there being no available space for extension, with no school playing field to build on, officials met to discuss opportunities to increase school capacity.
Following a meeting held at the school on Monday, Suffolk County Council has agreed to undertake a feasibility study to assess options for extending the capacity.
The study will assess the potential use of existing supplementary buildings around the site that are not currently used for classroom provision.
MP for South Suffolk James Cartlidge joined local county councillor Jenny Antill, the council’s cabinet member for education and skills Lisa Chambers and Lavenham Primary School headteacher Jan Foster to discuss the issue.
Mr Cartlidge said: “I am pleased the county council is taking this forward. Lavenham Primary School is very tight for space and this inevitably impacts on the number of pupils who can attend.
“However, I felt when I first visited that the old toilet block offered an option for space to at least consider an additional classroom.
“On my visits to other primary schools in the constituency I have seen good examples of well-designed modular classrooms occupying a similar space. I hope that we can make progress because a new classroom would make a big difference.”
