An MP from Suffolk was appointed exchequer secretary to the Treasury under new Chancellor Jeremy Hunt.

James Cartlidge, MP for South Suffolk, including Sudbury, succeeded Felicity Buchan to the role today.

His roles include supporting the chief secretary of the Treasury on public spending issues, managing regional economic policy, and managing growth and productivity, as well as climate and energy taxes.

He is also responsible for alcohol and tobacco duties, The Crown Estate and Royal households, as well as British overseas territories and Crown dependencies.

Mr Cartlidge said: "I'm honoured to have been appointed exchequer secretary to the Treasury and am looking forward to joining the Chancellor and the Treasury team."
