South Suffolk MP raises concerns over HGVs in Sproughton

James Cartlidge MP

The MP for South Suffolk said he shares concerns raised by residents in a village near Ipswich over HGVs being diverted through their roads.

Sproughton residents have complained on several occasions of weight limits being dropped or ignored on the B1113, which has allows lorries to use the narrow village road as a slip road for the A14.

They have at times raised these issues with their parish council, Babergh district councillor Helen Davies, Suffolk county councillor Christopher Hudson and James Cartlidge, their local MP.

Mr Cartlidge has said that agrees with the concerns being raised and will be writing to the county council for a solution to be found.

He said: "I have visited Sproughton on a number of occasions to meet with residents and discuss their concerns about the volume and speed of traffic through the village, including joining the Community Speed Watch.

"Sproughton’s junctions and narrow roads frequently face congestion and coupled with the village’s close proximity to the A14, I entirely understand how HGVs, often on diversion, exacerbate the problem.

"I have discussed this with Suffolk Highways on multiple occasions to assess potential solutions, which have previously sought views on the best way to alleviate the traffic issues.

"I have been in touch with the county council and would encourage them to prioritise this as a key traffic challenge for my constituents."

Between September and December, Sproughton was also subject to traffic being diverted throughout the night due to National Highway works on the A14 - which resulted in a collision with a house and broken drain covers.

Villagers had hoped that the end of the diversion would mean the end of HGVs coming through the area, but that has not entirely been the case.
