South Suffolk MP James Cartlidge unveiled the new facility at Thomas Gainsborough School in Great Cornard, near Sudbury, last Friday.

The initiative is a partnership between local solicitors firm Wayman & Long and the school. It is hoped it will inspire students to pursue careers in the legal profession.

Wayman & Long, which has offices in Sudbury and Clare, will offer ongoing support to students, who will be able to gain hands-on experience of a working law firm.

Carolyn Armstrong, from Wayman & Long, said: “We want to encourage young people from this area [who are] interested in pursuing a career in law and give them an insight into the legal profession.”

Meanwhile, Kenny Alexander, director of sixth form at Thomas Gainsborough School, said: “As far as I am aware, this collaboration is the first of its kind in the UK.

“It is so important to provide students with an opportunity for relevant and meaningful work experience whilst encouraging local businesses to become more involved with schools.” As part of the collaboration, Wayman & Long will be involved in running lessons, mentoring and providing a dedicated classroom within the sixth form.

The company is already mentoring Year 13 student Lewis Wingate, who approached them about work
experience during the summer holidays.

Partner Stephen Whiskin said he was impressed with Lewis’s attitude and tenacity and has offered him an apprentice-style mentoring programme, working at the practice one day a week and during the school holidays.

Lewis will also return to Wayman & Long throughout his time at university and the firm has pledged to offer him a job once he completes his study.
