A horse riding charity located near Hadleigh has earned plaudits from local politicians for its work to improve the lives of people with disabilities.

South Suffolk MP James Cartlidge and Babergh District Council leader John Ward met volunteers at the Shelley Centre for Therapeutic Riding to discuss and observe the specialist riding therapy the facility offers, which helps those with disabilities to develop confidence, mobility and co-ordination.

“I was so impressed with the work of all the brilliant volunteers at the Shelley Centre, making a real difference to the lives of disabled people,” said Mr Cartlidge.

“While I was attending, a group of children and young adults were being assisted to ride around the main circuit and were visibly enjoying the experience.

“While a South Suffolk charity, the centre provides support to people with disabilities from across the region and I pay tribute to the dedicated staff who make this all possible.”

Mr Cartlidge added that he and Mr Ward are looking into how they can assist the charity with the challenges it faces around regulatory and licensing fees.

“I really enjoyed being able to see first hand the work done by the volunteers at the Shelley Centre and the benefits it has for disabled people of all ages,” said Mr Ward.

“They and their families get so much out of the time they spend there. The relationships that they build with the horses help enormously with both their physical and mental wellbeing. I know, as a rider, how much fun it is to spend time on a horse.

“All involved should be congratulated for the time they give and the difference they make.”
