Relocating Sudbury’s bus station would attract much-needed investment and regenerate the town, according to a local MP following the launch of a new feasibility study.
Babergh District Council, Sudbury Town Council and Suffolk County Council agreed a study exploring the future of the bus station in Hamilton Road, as part of a major improvements plan.
Last month, the district council secured £250,000 in Bus Service Improvement Plan funding, to go towards a range of short-term enhancements.
The measures could include improving the general layout, waiting areas, passenger information, waiting areas and toilet facilities, with detailed plans to be set out in due course.
Alongside this, the authorities will consider long-term options, including the possibility of relocating the bus station entirely.
The feasibility study was welcomed by South Suffolk MP James Cartlidge, who suggested a relocation would allow the potential of the Hamilton Road and Borehamgate areas to be unlocked.
Mr Cartlidge has previously called for the county council – which received £26 million from the Government’s Local Authority Bus Grant in 2025 – to prioritise capital funding for a new Sudbury bus station.
He argued that, by moving the facility elsewhere, it would encourage investment in the brownfield site at Borehamgate, to deliver new homes, shops and jobs.
“I’m delighted that Sudbury Town Council has joined the district and county councils in approving a feasibility study into the future of the town’s bus station,” Mr Cartlidge said.
“This is an important step towards unlocking the huge potential of the Borehamgate and Hamilton Road quarter.
“Sudbury has significant opportunities for growth, but for too long, regeneration has been held back by the challenge of relocating the bus station.
“Without this, it would be much harder to attract the scale of private investment required.
“Of course, it’s vital that any new location still delivers an effective service for the town.
“The key point is that funding is now available to do this work, but it requires every stakeholder concerned to seize this moment, in order to crystallise Sudbury’s regeneration.
“I will continue working with local partners to take this forward – backing our town centre, supporting local businesses and creating a stronger future for Sudbury.”
